Meet Makena: A Passion for People and Purpose

Makena is a lifelong Washingtonian who moved to the Skagit Valley five years ago. As a dedicated community builder and social justice advocate, “Mak” aligns perfectly with Skagit Gleaners’ mission of empowering families and fostering a community focused on sustainability, equity, and compassion. “I love working with our amazing volunteers! I may be physically tired, but I’m emotionally lifted for the rest of the day.”

When she’s not working at Skagit Gleaners, she runs her own business where she handcrafts organic bath and body care products sold in co-ops and grocery stores throughout the Pacific Northwest. Some of Makena’s favorite heart-nourishing activities include gardening, working on her home, and hosting weekly meditation circles with friends. She also has her hands full as the primary treat dispenser for her furry companions, Rudy the cat and Durga the dog, who bring her daily joy. An avid movie buff, she enjoys cooking dinner for friends before heading to the Lincoln Theater for a show. Additionally, she volunteers at Recovery Café Skagit, where she actively supports Recovery Dharma in the North Sound region.

Drop in on Sundays and greet Makena while you shop!
