Frequently Asked Questions:

How much does it cost to participate in Skagit Gleaners?

The only costs are the yearly membership dues and the work needed to fulfill your volunteer hours.

How many times a week can I shop?

Currently you can shop three times a week, but this is subject to change.

How much can I take?

You will get to choose products which will supplement the economic and nutritional needs of your family. The amount and variety received by Skagit Gleaners varies from day to day, so the amount and variety you get will also vary. Daily amounts are always well posted in Distribution. Members are responsible for providing their own shopping containers (boxes, tubs , totes etc).

Why do I need to work?

We are a self-help group, not a food bank. Skagit Gleaners is run solely on volunteer help from its members. Without the help of all our members, Skagit Gleaners would not be able to stay open. Work hours are expected of you even if you have limited time and abilities.

“Helping people help themselves” maintains dignity, self-esteem, and provides an alternative to area food banks. Working benefits you, other members, and the community. It takes many hours of work for Skagit Gleaners to operate.

How many hours will I need to work?

Members who join in January need to work 13 hours each quarter. Members who join later will need to work less because hours are prorated monthly.

Even though you only need to work the minimum number of hours, it is greatly appreciated if you work more hours.

What jobs can I do?

Our desire is that you will soon find a job that is fulfilling because it suits your skills, interests, and available time. Ask a lot of questions and you will soon discover the right job for you.
